We can thank the fictional Elizabeth Swann of the highly popular Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies who has inspired many to get the high seas pirate wench look. Not to mention the numerous pirate festivals and parties held all over the world and, of course, the international Talk Like a Pirate Day holiday that comes our way every September 19!

Pirates continue to hold sway in imagination and in popular culture. While modern day piracy, notably in Somalia, continues, so do the romanticized adventures of pirates of years gone buy. While pirates have been immortalized in song, legend and literature for thousands of years, when we think of pirates we are often times thinking of what historians have dubbed the Golden Age of Piracy which dates from approximately the mid 17th century through the early 18th century A.D. notably this was also the height of New World and Caribbean piracy.

As mentioned previously, nowadays we see a resurgence of interest with the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Along with this many have sought out the popular costumes for Halloween, theme parties. Medieval and Renaissance festivals are also popular gathering places for pirates, and high standards of authentic clothing and accessories are seen. Show up in the proper pirate shirt and hat, carrying your pistol and your sword for some incidental swashbuckling.

Women pirates, notably Grace O’Malley of (Gráinne Ní Mháille) Ireland are well documented in history. Author Anne Chambers has written the definitive biography — Granuaile: Ireland’s Pirate Queen — of this notable woman who lived in the 16th century. The daughter of the chieftain of the O’Malley clan and as such wealthy in the sea and landholdings of the family which she inherited. She was known for her fearsome leadership throughout her life and her historic meeting with Queen Elizabeth.

Her life story was chronicled in the Discovery Channel Warrior Women series documentary which you can watch on YouTube . Thanks to the documentary as well as the research and biography by author Anne Chambers this remarkable woman’s life story is becoming more well known.

Also well known are the Caribbean pirates Mary Read (who lived periodically, disguised as a man under the alias Mark Read) and Anne Bonny (sometimes spelled as Anne Bonney). Both women eventually became members of the crew of Calico Jack Rackham (sometimes spelled as Rackam).

There are several famous women pirates of the China Seas in the early 20th century including Lai Choi San who inspired the Dragon Lady character in the comic strip Terry and the Pirates, showing once and for all that for the determined woman, there were no barriers or limitations. So while the “sexy pirate costume” may be popular, remember that the “lady” pirates of the Golden Age and beyond were just as ruthless as the men and they were survivors!

So in other words, teens, girls and women can be assured their pirate fancy dress finery has a basis in history! You can be a real life pirate or a fictional pirate such as Elizabeth Swann. So whether you travel as a pirate woman, buccaneer or tavern wench, you are all set for your next theme party or Halloween celebration with flattering and fun to wear historical woman pirate costume!
